10 Perfect Rock Albums Of The 1990s
5. What's The Story Morning Glory - Oasis
What's with the early '90s having a need to be sad all the time? As much as acts like Pearl Jam and Soundgarden may have been great slices of rock for the time, the amount of moodiness going on in their songs was a lot more than your average rock fan could handle. Just when the grunge fad came and went though, a couple of lads from Manchester made us all want to celebrate all over again.
After coming off of the massive success of Definitely Maybe, What's the Story Morning Glory almost feels like a victory lap put to music. Compared to the first outing, the Gallagher Brothers really struck gold with this record, making songs that were both emotionally potent while also celebrating what it means to be alive. As opposed to the songs on the first record like Supersonic, tracks like Champagne Supernova and Don't Look Back In Anger almost felt like they had legendary status prestamped on them.
There was also a bit of a nod to the great songwriters of old, as if the Beatles and Stones had come back together, only with a snotty energy to boot. It might be kind of funny to think of the '90s as the '60s upside down, but this is where the era of all time classic rock music came back for a little bit.
