10 Perfect Rock Albums Of The '70s
8. 2112 - Rush
For all of the blues noodling going around the rock scene at the time, the entire decade was incredibly kind to the world of prog rock. Only in the '70s were you just as likely to hear a song with a blues based lick alongside a track that could change time signatures without a care in the world. Then again, no great album comes to fruition without a good fight.
Despite their reputation as the ultimate music geek band nowadays, Rush were incredibly close to being dead in the water before 2112, having been given the riot act by their record company to come up with hits before they were dropped. Almost to spite them, this album's opening 20 minute song became the lynchpin for their entire career, creating a tribe of musicians who related to the complex story of space federations and speaking out against the higher ups.
Aside from the actual title track, the rest of the album is still some of the most approachable prog rock of the day, from the twists and turns that you get from The Twilight Zone to the down and dirty blues licks that turn up on the tail end of Something For Nothing. Rush had already done enough to impress your average rock fan, but this marks the moment where they actually became legends.
