10 Perfect Rock Albums That Almost Destroyed Bands

5. The Black Album - Metallica

There's probably a certain type of thrash fan who wished that Metallica had been destroyed after the making of the Black Album. Since this was their big "sellout" moment for the purists, it would have been a fitting end for the former kings of thrash metal to fall flat on their faces and never be heard from again. While the album would eventually go on to become one of the best selling metal records of all time, that's not to say that the sessions were care free.

With Bob Rock at the production helm, a lot of these sessions were painstaking for almost everyone involved, from James Hetfield trying his best to get professional vocal training to Lars Ulrich getting different pieces of plywood to put around the room so his drums would sound massive. Out of everyone though, no dust up has been more public than what Kirk Hammett had to go through for The Unforgiven.

After having an original draft of the solo, Rock didn't mince words about how much he hated this new version and managed to piss off Kirk to the point where he made the final take that went down into rock history. There may have been a few questionable things done to get the results they wanted, but when the album is still selling like it is, you can't really argue with the results.
