10 Perfect Rock Albums That No One Saw Coming

3. Sgt. Peppers - The Beatles

The entire rock scene were in for a shakeup the first time the Beatles were on the Ed Sullivan Show. Marking the first turn of the British Invasion, the friendly moptops that everyone got to know on that stage became one of the biggest boy bands that the world had ever known, being courted from one room to another just to maintain some sense of privacy. There comes a point where you want that to end though, and Sgt. Peppers was the Beatles' major leap into the unknown.

Although albums like Revolver and Rubber Soul had eclectic tendencies that hadn't been heard before, this was the first time fans got a full dose of psychedelia, with Paul McCartney coming up with the idea to make an album from the perspective of an imaginary band. Without having to worry about taking things on the road anymore, these are the results of different experiments in the studio, from using a string section on She's Leaving Home to creating a circus atmosphere for John Lennon's Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite.

Coming out right as the Summer of Love was about to enter its prime era, Sgt. Peppers became the face of what rock and roll could be outside of the parties that were going on around the world. These were songs that definitely had that rock edge to them, but if you have the right idea behind you, rock can sometimes be molded in something people would consider to be art.
