10 Perfect Rock Music Songs Of The 2010s

2. Promise - Slash Feat. Chris Cornell

Slash's self-titled first solo album brought together vocal talent from across and outside of the rock music spectrum, featuring Lemmy, Ozzy, Fergie, Adam Levine and his future permanent vocalist Myles Kennedy (the only artist to sing two tracks on the record).

However, while there are many highlights and a feast of textures and tones, none shine brighter than Chris Cornell on the album's fifth track, Promise. Though he starts in a typically rough and raspy gear, Cornell runs the gamut of his full vocal range throughout the song, bringing depth and emotion to some surprisingly affective lyrics about persevering against adversity in a world that wants to crush you -- subject matter made all the more profound given how we lost the man himself.

Needless to say though, this is no one-sided effort, and Slash's axe work more than delivers, with an intro better than most contemporary rock song solos, and a solo that simultaneously expands upon and hammers home both the vocal melodies and the guitar work from the rest of the track. Promise is a typically rich and luxurious piece of work, reminding us all -- as if we'd ever forget -- why the man in the top-hat and shades is very much the man.
