10 Perfect Rock Singles Of The 80s

4. The Stone Roses: Fools Gold (1989)

Before Oasis were swaggering around the streets of Manchester, the Stone Roses were the reining kings of indie rock. With a love of '60s psychedelia and acid house, the Madchester scene birthed what would be known as the Second Summer of Love. MDMA and LSD fulled this new type of music. Inspired by acts like New Order - who fused guitar with dance music - groups like the Charlatans and Happy Mondays carried the good times with their joyously carefree take on rock.

But no one encapsulated this sound like the Stone Roses. Their music was all about how it made you move; it got into your body and seeped into the hips. Drugs weren't a prerequisite to enjoy this stuff, but they went hand in hand all the same.

Fools Gold was the single that sauntered into the mind of the population; if the Madchester scene hadn't appealed to you before, it would now. Effortlessly cool rhythms, combined with a laid back attitude, fuelled the group's defining single.

Once Fools Gold drops, the urge to sway is irresistible.
