10 Perfect Rock Singles Of The 90s

9. Everlong - Foo Fighters (1997)

Foo Fighters took the energy of Nirvana but stripped away the brooding angst. It was still rebellious rock n' roll but with a less tortured spirit at the helm. It's a testimony to Dave Grohl that he was able to survive the Nirvana tragedy, with enough resolve to keep making music.

Although Foo Fighters have become one of the biggest groups in the world, nothing has matched the impact of their earlier work. Everlong is the cream of their early endeavours. There is a duality to this number. There's a melancholic aspect to the guitar riff, as it drives along with a determined resolve. But, the lyrics paint a different picture.

For a guy who once pounded the hell out of the drums in a grunge band, Grohl can write some damn heartfelt stuff. The song encapsulates all the nuances of new and impassioned relationship. The verse captures the nervous hesitance of holding your cards close, during the early stages of romance. But, the sombre repeated guitar hook, eventually gives way to a more triumphant chorus- serving to represent the revelation of ones feelings. This is one of Grohl's more beautifully soppy numbers, but oh damn, does it punch hard.
