7. Coffee & TV - Blur (1999)

You know we had to stray into the jaunty realm of Britpop at some point. During the height of the cultural movement, Blur were hailed as the reining kings. The art school boys, were set up as the rivals of Oasis, representing the more well-to-do side of the scene.

Although Coffee & Tv was released some time after The Battle of Britop in 1995 - which saw Oasis and Blur fight for chart supremacy - the track was indicative of the groups sound at that time. Damon Albarn's vocals had a wistful and carefree nature, which set him in opposition to Liam Gallaghers snarling vocal drawl. The whimsical melodies and catchy hooks were indicative of the English charm Blur strove for. Much like their earlier hit, Park Life, the lyrics expressed the tedium that comes with living a comfortable, yet boring existence.

It was a return to the typically English sound of Blur. Particularly, after their self-titled 1997 record, which explored a heavier guitar driven sound, in an attempt to break the US. We can all get down with Song 2, but it's not a number the represents the true spirit of Britpop...
