10 Perfect Rock Singles Of The 90s

5. Buddy Holly - Weezer (1994)

Flannel shirts and greasy hair weren't necessarily prerequisites for making it big during the early '90s. Weezer proved you could be a bunch awkward nerds, sporting square hair cuts, and still make an impact. As long as you wrote some catchy lyrics and slapped some distortion on your guitar riffs, you were on your way to success.

But, it wasn't as easy ride. Initial reactions to early gigs, left Rivers Cuomo disheartened. Fans were hyped on the wild and erratic presence of Soundgarden and Nirvana. Nerd rock just seem a bit, nerdy... But Cuomeo and his band mates, managed to cobble a demo tape together that had enough promise to catch the eye of a major label. Although the recording process saw the firing of the original guitar player, the finished result was an album that defined the band's career. It stands as one of the best alt-rock records of the decade.

Buddy Holly is indicative of Weezer: it's sort of silly; there's a slap stick element to it (amplified by the video), and it it doesn't take itself seriously. But, it's infectiously pleasing.
