10 Perfect Rock Songs Cut From Classic Albums
8. Stall Me - Panic at the Disco
When Panic at the Disco announced the rollout for their new album Vices and Virtues, most fans were cautiously optimistic. Brendon Urie may have still had charisma, but the loss of chief songwriter Ryan Ross left them without one of their most valuable assets, leaving Brendon to take the reins of what the band were going to do. Brendon had clearly been paying attention though, and some of the material was too big to fit onto just one album.
In between the traditional Panic singles of the time like Ready to Go and The Ballad of Mona Lisa, Stall Me is one of the best songs from this era, released on the deluxe edition of the album. Having a much more theatrical sound than Pretty Odd, Brendon is still using all of the flowery lyrics that came from the past record, only refined in a more palatable package this time around. While you can tell that there are some parts that are left incomplete without Ryan, you can hear them trying to infuse more rock into this song as well, a definite encouraging sign after spending most of the last record going down the folksy road.
The emo wave may have been coming to an end around the early 2010’s, but Panic weren’t going to go quietly, and this was their announcement that they still could rock when they wanted to. And with Fall Out Boy long since on hiatus around this time, it wouldn’t be a surprise if Pete Wentz looked at this song specifically and decided to use it as the model for his band's comeback just a few years later.
