10 Perfect Rock Songs From 1971

4. Wild Horses - The Rolling Stones

Of all of the gifts that the Rolling Stones have brought to the world, you can't really categorize any of them as the most wholesome of activities. I mean, from the first time that you heard something like Satisfaction, this was far from the cutesy romance ditties that the Beatles were spitting out around the same time. Once the Stones grew up a little, their take on the slower song got a lot more heartfelt than you would ever imagine.

Seeing how they chased the Beatles comparisons around through most of their career, Wild Horses is the kind of song that belongs to Jagger and Richards, making a tune that feels both jaded and sad at the same time. Since all these boys knew was the power of the blues back in the day, the protagonist in this song pretty much knows his old flame has gone, despite all of his attempts to buy her everything she ever wants.

This guy isn't going to count himself out yet. If anything, he'd want to at least preserve the moment of happiness, and maybe even catch up with his lover in the next life if she would have him. Compared to the usual ballad material, these are stories of heartache that seemed all too common in the world of rock and roll. But who knows? Maybe these two are riding those wild horses into the sunset on the other side.
