10 Perfect Rock Songs That Are Ridiculously Long

4. Whipping Post - Allman Brothers Band

In the wake of the hippy movement, you had the boom of what would normally be called jam bands. Even though they may have played the traditional 3 minute songs on the radio, things would stretch out once they took to the stage, as songs morphed into jam sessions where every band member could show their stuff. These kind of acts were meant for the road, and one live album gave us one of the first glimpses of what hard rock could be.

Though the Allman Brothers Band remain a fixture of Southern rock on the radio, the sound of Whipping Post almost veers closer to hard rock most of the time, with an off kilter bass groove anchoring everything down. As the track unfolds, you get little snapshots of the band in their creative prime, as every member feeds off each other, from trading different guitar licks to building up some of the meanest grooves of the '70s.

If we had to single out one person here, it would have to be Duane Allman, taking the delicate touch of the slide guitar and squeezing beauty out of it every single time. Then again, there's always a question of what to call something like this, since it delves into almost progressive rock territory on the back half. In this business though, we don't have time to name everything. To put it bluntly, it kicks ass and there's not much else that you need to know.
