10 Perfect Rock Songs That Don't Have Any Lyrics
3. A Warm Place - Nine Inch Nails
The entire trip that comes with Nine Inch Nails' the Downward Spiral is not necessarily the most wholesome story rock and roll has to offer. Framed almost like the musical equivalent of a psychological thriller, Trent Reznor really bared his soul on this project, drawing many parallels between his life and Mr. Self Destruct, who goes through the different darkness in the human psyche and eventually contemplates suicide by the end of the record. Before everything snaps for good though, we get a brief flashback of what could have been on A Warm Place.
Coming right after Big Man With a Gun, we've already been through some of the most intense parts of the record, with Trent singing about wanting everything from carnal desire in Closer to being on the verge of killing someone on the last track. After all of the emotional carnage we've seen, the soothing synthesizers on this song almost feel like a warm blanket by comparison, tiding you over for a minute to really take a breather from all of the madness we've seen.
In the narrative of Mr. Self Destruct, this could almost be a moment where Trent starts to see some vision of reality once again, either going back to a nostalgic memory or finding hope that he will get out of his own toxic thoughts. That turns out to be a false sense of security though, with the songs to follow getting more bleak until he finally reaches full self destruction on the title track. This man's future isn't looking all that good, but for a brief few minutes here, it looked like everything might turn out alright.
