10 Perfect Rock Songs That Were INSANELY Controversial

5. R*pe Me - Nirvana

From day one, Nirvana always seemed to have the best interest of every one of their fans in mind. Kurt Cobain was always looking for ways to keep his audience small, and the arrival of jocks at their concerts started to drive him up the wall, now having to play to the same sort of people who used to beat him up in high school. That's just one side of his beliefs, and Kurt was looking to shock people when In Utero came out.

Although the title itself might be a bit much to take in all at once, this was never intended to be about someone enjoying sexual abuse. Kurt had always been an advocate for women's rights, and hearing about those mistreated at his shows and in his fanbase led him to write this in retort, asking for those sick people of the world to lay it on him instead.

That's just one small part of the problem here. While the song was never properly released as a single, Kurt did get his chance to shine at the MTV Awards, choosing to play the first few bars of this song before tearing into Lithium, which left most of the film crew in shock and scrambling to find out what to do. While it might not have been the best time to debut a song like that, the truth will always have to get out sometime, and Kurt took the moment to do what he thought was right.
