10 Perfect Rock Songs Wasted On Terrible Albums
3. Don't Go Away - Oasis
Around the end of the ‘90s, it looked like Oasis were starting to believe their own hype just a little bit. After becoming gods of Britpop on the back of What’s the Story Morning Glory, Be Here Now was the moment where things started to unravel just a little bit, with even Noel Gallagher saying that the album is a complete disaster from start to finish. While you can still hear the original Oasis in there somewhere, Don’t Go Away might be the closest that they’ve come to reaching Wonderwall levels of heartache.
Being one of the few simple ballads on the record, this is one of the most earnest songs that Noel Gallagher wrote at this time, having a much more straightforward message about trying to get your lover to stay with you when things are looking grim. Granted, even with Liam’s phenomenal vocal performance on this song, it can’t help but fall prey to some of the overarching problems of the record as well, with different guitars being piled one on top of the other in the mix and the whole thing sounding larger than life when a simple setup probably would have gotten the job done for a song like this.
The beauty of this song might shine through the production, but the same can’t be said for the rest of the record, which tends to just be a barrage of noise sometimes on songs like D’You Know What I Mean or a handful of times where the Gallaghers waste the potential of what could have been great songs like All Around the World, which they thought needed to be turned into a 9 minute juggernaut. Be Here Now might be a chore to sift through in one sitting, but Don’t Go Away almost feels like a reward you get halfway through.
