10 Perfect Soft Rock Music Albums Of The '80s

8. Ambrosia - One Eighty

The Los Angeles prog rock outfit's sudden transition into full-on soft rock really came in with the the 1980 release of their fourth LP.

'One Eighty' saw the group move so completely into softer, more pop-friendly fare that they even received a Best Pop Vocal Group nomination at the Grammys for their efforts. Led by hit singles 'Biggest Part of Me' and 'You're the Only Woman (You & I)', the LP saw the group at both their sappiest and most commercially friendly.

Peaking at No.25 on the Billboard 100 and picking up a gold certification for crossing the 500,000 mark in sales, the unexpected emphasis on softer fare garnered the group some of their largest mainstream interest.

Frontman David Pack relishes the often romance-oriented focus of the lyrics, delivering a fine-tuned, suitably sensitive vocal performance throughout. Multi-instrumentalist David Cutler Lewis, meanwhile, comes in handy in ensuring the group don't completely lose their prog edge, garnishing the songs with everything from an acoustic piano to a vast array of synthesizers.

For fans, the 'One Eighty' title was a perfectly on-point reflection of the drastic changes in the group's style. While it was polarizing among their core audience, the overall quality of the LP successfully won over critics and soft rock lovers alike.
