10 Pop Albums That Turn 10 In 2014

6. Evermore - Dreams

RELEASED: 27 September 2004 "Dreams" was the debut long-player from Evermore, the New Zealand band of brothers Jon, Peter and Dann Hume. The album was something of a slow-burner in Australia, hitting its chart peak only off the back of its second single, more than half a year after its own release. Of the album's three singles only "It's Too Late" was released in 2004 with "For One Day" following almost six months later in early 2005 and "Come To Nothing" several months later. Jon's sometimes manic vocals are always a treat and they shine on the likes of "Are You Satisfied" and the over-the-top "Into The Ocean (Calling You)", while Peter also gives lead vocals a whirl on the quirky "Dreaming...pt.2". And ten years later? It's still such a good album, full of interesting production, tweaked and layered vocals and an overall style that's somewhere between alternative and mainstream pop. It's hard to pick just one stand-out song: "It's Too Late" gallops along, "For One Day" is unrelenting, "This Unavoidable Thing Between Us" is just kinda sad and the slightly epic "Know It's True" is definitely a highlight.

I'm just a guy who loves words. I discover vast tracts of uncharted enjoyment by chucking words together and coming up with stuff that talks about the things I enjoy and love most. I'm also a massive listaholic, so I'm probably talking about a list, looking at a list or banging away at another What Culture list as you read this. My tone's pretty relaxed and conversational, with a liberal sprinkling of sparkling wit, wilting sarcasm and occasional faux-condescension - with tongue almost always firmly planted in cheek.
