10 Pop Songs That Are Actually Incredibly Dark
4. Last Kiss - Pearl Jam
None of the bands that came out of the first wave of grunge could really be considered happy go lucky most of the time. Nirvana's songs may have set the world on fire, but the appeal made you want to tap into the more emotionally vulnerable side of yourself rather than take on the world or anything. And when Pearl Jam decided to dip their toes into the oldies pool, it makes sense that it would be one of the most depressing songs that classic rock has to offer.
If you listen to just the backing track of Last Kiss, this is the kind of song that feels like it belongs on one of those classic oldies compilations that your grandpa has, where you have girl groups talking about being in love with boys and Little Richard screaming his head off. For Last Kiss though, the entire song takes place in a car wreck, as this couple is thrown from the car and sharing one last kiss before the woman dies, leaving the boy stranded alone to live with the memory of his old flame.
Granted, no other song could be more suited for Eddie Vedder's tone of voice though, sounding much more vulnerable and tapping into that kind of tone that made Jeremy so effective, as he talks about being good for the rest of his life so he can one day see his baby on the other side. Even when grunge decides that it wants to chill out and play one of the classics though, you're still always in store for something that's a lot more heavy.
