10 Positive Songs We Could All Use Right Now
2. Recovery - Frank Turner
For the past decade, Frank Turner has been the poster boy for the optimistic rocker. Though all of his songs have just a hint of darkness, the delivery is so heartfelt that you can't help but relate with Turner's stories when he has an acoustic guitar in his hands. While it may be far from a pleasant ride, "Recovery" may be his most poignant call for self-improvement.
From the first read through of the lyrics, this man is clearly a mess, as he wakes up in a flat he doesn't recognize after having taking drugs he doesn't know the name of. In the first few lines of the chorus, he almost seems to be sarcastically mocking himself that recovery seems like a fading prospect, but the rest of the song tells a different story.
It's here where we find out this is actually a love song to Turner's old flame, who has left him because of his screwup ways. Though he may not able to be with her, the song's direction goes from cynical to hopeful as Turner accepts the faults he has and commits himself to cleaning up his act so he may one day make amends with his love. It's definitely not a great spot to be in, but what we're seeing here is a man who's made a lot of mistakes but hasn't completely counted himself out yet. Yes, Frank, even we can recover from all of this.
