10 Psychedelic Rock Albums You Need To Know
1. Maggot Brain - Funkadelic (1971)
The Grandfather of Funk, George Clinton is responsible for inspiring Eddie Hazel to give the world one of the greatest guitar solos of all time. The 10 minute opening track Maggot Brain is one continuous guitar extravaganza. With every re-listen it only continues to blow your mind, especially when you remember Hazel recorded it in one take.
The conception of this track has become something of a legend. Clinton wanted to open the album up with a sombre ode to mother earth, so whilst the pair of them were tripping their nuts off, Clinton told Hazel to play like his mother had just died. This was the result. The album deserves your attention for the opening track alone, but it goes on into a celebratory explosion of R&B fused with psych rock, all smothered in the funky stylings of George Clinton. This was the album when psych rock became more than just mind altering guitar solos, this was music you could bust a move to.
After Eddie Hazel's guitar-intensive opening number, Clinton unleashed some of the funkiest sounds to ever be conceived - only for Hazel to blow your mind again on the track Super Stupid, a hard rock riff driven song that further displays this guys talent as a guitarist.
With out this album you wouldn't have the Red Hot Chili Peppers and you can forget about Childish Gambino.
