10 Psychedelic Rock Albums You Need To Know
5. The Rabbit That Hunts Tigers - Yin Yin (2019)
This record dropped out of nowhere at the tail end of 2019. The entire sound and even the album cover doesn't immediately scream the underground Dutch music scene, but that's were Yin Yin hail from.
The initial reaction to this sound leaves one feeling like these guys are trying to lean on the success of Khruangbin, but as the album develops it's clear they have their own thing going on. A lot of the guitar sounds share a similar East Asian inspired aesthetic, but pretty quickly its established these guys are more about creating a dance vibe, rather than just exploring musical space with sound. They've fused their particular brand of East Asian inspired rock with some pumping disco beats that you can't help but move to.
The lack of vocals and all the ambient background noise of people chattering, makes this record feel more like a slick soundtrack for a lost Tarantino movie than anything else. It's too early to regard this as a classic but it's one interesting foray into the realm of psychedelic rock.
With a debut album sounding this fully formed it's exciting to see where these guys will go next.
