10 Punk Albums You Need To Own

7. Raw Power - The Stooges

Before punk had even entered the cultural mainstream, no one really had a clue what to do with the more raucous side of rock. While the rock scene was opening up to different styles in the late '60s, most of the bands that were pumping out more noisey rock and roll were typically put in the hard rock and metal category rather than punk. There may have been the beginnings of punk with bands like the MC5, but the Stooges came in and set the whole room on fire.

Though the Stooges already had two crazed albums to their name at this point, Raw Power was hard rock as interpreted by Iggy Pop, which made for some of the most energetic rock songs ever committed to tape like "Search and Destroy." Even though there are some slower moments across the track listing like "Gimme Danger," they are quickly snuffed out by tracks like "Shake Appeal," which sounds like a lunatic take on something like Little Richard.

The band may have made a twisted masterpiece, but it ended up being one of the last artistic gasps of their career, with the band quickly imploding and Iggy moving on to a solo career with the help of David Bowie. The Stooges may not have been a band that lasted terribly long, but boy did their star shine bright while it lasted.
