10 Punk Bands You Must Listen To

5. Bikini Kill

It's probably pretty safe to lay a large part of credit for Riot Girl (or, probably more accurately, Riot Grrrl) on Bikini Kill. They have been attributed as influences for Sleater-Kinney, The Gossip, and countless other (particularly female-driven) bands. Formed in 1990, they were noted for their ferociously feminist lyrics. Riot Grrrl is very much associated with third-wave feminism and the acceptance that there is more than one way to express such feminism. Bikini Kill's arguably most popular song, 'Rebel Girl' (produced by the one and only Joan Jett) appears to encourage female community with lyrics such as "That girl she holds her head up so high/ I think I want to be her best friend". A notable trait of Bikini Kill (and the Riot Grrrl scene as a whole) was outspokenness about issues such as domestic violence, rape, and double-standards against women. 'White Boy' is a perfect example of this, citing typical arguments "for" rape such as "I don't think it's a problem 'cause/ Most of the girls ask for it", countering with "Uh huh, how did they ask for it?" and "White boy, don't laugh, don't cry, just die!" The band attracted a lot of attention post-'Rebel Girl', and were cited as pioneers in the Riot Grrrl movement. However, lead singer Kathleen Hanna felt the band were being misinterpreted, and they broke up in 1997.

Fan of Taylor Swift and the Dead Kennedys (a duet I can only dream of). I like dystopias, slasher films, and video games that make me feel things.
