Siouxsie and her Banshees are a bit of a wild card if we're staying strictly punk here. Initially aligned with the punk movement in the 1970s, they quickly evolved into something very different with pop and avant-garde influences, eventually being moving somewhat closer to the goth movement of the 1980s. The band formed in 1976, but didn't have a label until 1978 despite the fact that they were selling out shows. Their first single, Hong Kong Garden, made its way into the UK Top Ten which is an unusual feat for any punk band, especially one as arguably weird. Their success, and influence, hardly stops there. Artists from Dave Navarro and Morrissey to PJ Harvey and the Scissor Sisters have cited the band as inspiration. Not only that, but they were joyously praised from the beginning by the music press. NME in particular appeared to be overtly generous to the innovative themes of the band, or else were paid off by Siouxsie Sioux personally. Aside from that, the Banshees were without a doubt one of the most influential bands that emerged from the punk movement for music across genres.
