10 Punk Rock Bands That Never Sold Out
8. Descendents
When you think of the punk scene, there's a certain image that normally comes into people's minds. Since this is the genre that mixed in the hardcore scene as well, the traditional punk is normally some dude with an insanely large mohawk, a leather jacket across his back, and a pair of Dr. Martens on his feet to stomp out anyone who stands in his way. So how did a band made up of uber nerds find their way into the mix?
Along with the hardcore bands that were just starting to get the ball rolling in the early '80s, Descendents were a breath of fresh air if only for their lyrics, talking about how proud they were of their nerdiness. Down to frontman Milo's look, these guys were on the more educated side of the spectrum, but not any less snotty than the other bands of their ilk.
Across their glory period, Descendents records do exactly what you'd expect them to do, thrashing the place to the ground and getting out of there in just a few minutes before you even knew what hit you. Even though the latest version of the band might not have the same fire under their ass that they had in their prime, there's never an album that goes by where you're questioning what's going on behind the scenes. These guys always answered to themselves before any A&R rep, and every one of their songs feels like a sudden rush of caffeine into your veins every time you turn it on.
