10 Punk Rock Bands That Never Sold Out
4. Chumbawumba
For the more uninitiated fans, Chumbawumba is probably just the band that gives you a nostalgia buzz every time you hear the "I get knocked down" song in the bar. It's not like that's unfair either, since most of the world dropped the band from their brain space the minute that Tubthumping went off the air. In the career of Chumbawumba though, that's only a blip on the radar for one of the craziest punk bands of all time.
Years before singing about taking whiskey drink and vodka drink, these anarchists were already deep into the punk scene for a decade, looking to make the kind of music that they liked and piss on the music industry in whatever way that they could. Though things started in pure punk, they weren't snobs about their preferences either, going for more accessible stuff in the '90s and eventually making more folksy sounding music in their later years.
They never lost touch of what they loved though, going so far as to make a mock up of charity singles back in the '80s and trashing some of the higher ups at music award shows whenever they could. Along the way, they always tried to challenge their audience and served up music that was more about testing the limits of their abilities rather than the catchy hit single. By the time they called it quits in the '00s, Chumbawumba really did feel like they took their band in whatever direction it could possibly go, radio be damned.
