10 Rarest Albums In Existence

2. John Lennon & Yoko Ono – ‘Double Fantasy’ - $1.5 million

If you need evidence of an album that critically isn’t considered great, yet is still one of the most sought records in existence, then look no further than ‘Double Fantasy’.

It’s a morbidly depressing piece of memorabilia due to the circumstances leading to its high value. It’s the copy that John Lennon autographed for his murderer Mark Chapman hours before being gunned down by him in 1980. The copy also has Chapman’s forensically enhanced fingerprints and police evidence marker. It’s an incredibly eerie relic in music. Its value is only enhanced by the pictures that circulated in the press after the murder of Lennon personally signing the album for Chapman.

It was found behind a plant box by a maintenance man outside the Dakota Building home of Lennon, after he was fatally shot, and used as a crucial piece of evidence in the trial. It was later returned to the maintenance man after the trial as a thank you. A lifelong Beatles fan, the maintenance man stored the album under his bed for 18 years before he sold the album to a private collector in 1999. It was up for sale again in 2017, this time with an asking price of $1.5 million.
