10 Rarest Albums In Existence
8. Aphex Twin – ‘Caustic Window’ - $46,300
Near 25 years ago, pioneer of experimental techno Aphex Twin had the intention of releasing album Caustic Window but abandoned plans to do so and left test-pressings with few people. One of those few people put their pressings on Discogs for sale in 2014. So a group of fans led by James Thomas went to Kickstarter to raise money so fans could buy the record collectively and digitally distribute it. The Kickstarter was a success, with 4124 backers raising $67,424.
The collective then auctioned off the physical record, selling it on eBay to Minecraft creator Markus “Notch” Persson for $46,300, with a portion of the profits going to charity.
“Persson’s a really cool guy, and didn’t even consider the charity aspect when buying it, but was really happy to hear that half is going to charity. He’s been an Aphex fan since he was young,” Thomas revealed. “My daughter was blown away that the guy who made the game she endlessly plays bought a record off her dad for 46K.”
The Swedish video game programmer and designer is an avid electronic music enthusiast, being a notable fan of EDM DJs like Skrillex and Deadmau5.
“It’s a very stupid way to spend money,” Persson admitted. “But why not? People say, ‘You should invest it.’ So I can get more money to put in a pile? At least if you spend it, it goes back and does something, maybe.”
