To give you a clue as to how valuable anything Beatles related is, a lock of John Lennon’s hair that a German hairdresser kept as a memento after giving John a haircut, once sold at auction for $35,000.

With that understanding you can see why a rare Beatles record would go for a sizeable amount of money. One of those records is ‘Till There Was You’, which Beatles historian Mark Lewisohn described as one of the "rarest and most collectable of all Beatles records.”

For years it belonged to Gerry And The Pacemakers pianist Les Maguire, since The Beatles manager Brian Epstein gave him the disc back in 1963. It was originally given to producer George Martin at EMI in an effort to snag a record deal for the four lads from Liverpool in the early '60s.

Characterised again as a ‘holy grail item’ by the BBC, the 10-inch record includes the tracks ‘Till There Was You’ and ‘Hello Little Girl’ and features Epstein’s own handwriting. It was mislabelled by Epstein as ‘Til There Was You’ which was credited to ‘Paul McCartney & The Beatles’. Hello Little Girl meanwhile, believed to be the first song written by John Lennon, was also mistitled as ‘Hullo Little Girl’ and credited to ‘John Lennon & The Beatles’.

Maguire stated it was the disc “that sparked the Beatles’ success.” It’s hard to argue; within months the band scored that record deal with EMI and produced their debut album. Beatlemania was born. Maguire had the disc locked away, wrapped and concealed in paper, in his attic for more than 50 years. He told how the record is "a special piece” and “It's no good to me so I've given it to my granddaughter, who is hoping to buy a house after passing her accountancy exams." She should have no issues there given it went for £77,500 at auction in 2016.
