10 Recent Indie-Rock Covers You'll Never Go Back From

6. Royal Blood - Happy (Original: Pharrell)

It's crazy to think about how much of an impact a film like Despicable Me 2 had on pop culture, not only cementing Minions as a box office and merchandising powerhouse but also preventing anyone in a public space in 2013 from escaping Pharrell's Happy.

So if Royal Blood were going to cover it, there was absolutely no way that they were going to not change it up. Here, the two-piece do as they've always done, going back to basics with just a bass guitar and drums. It's truly astonishing how those two components alone can generate such a huge sound, morphing a cheerful yet annoyingly catchy tune into something from a completely different genre, feeling right at home with the rest of their back catalogue.

The best part of Royal Blood's rendition is how they completely transformed the song's interpretation. What were penned as wholesome, uplifting lyrics now have a more sinister edge, giving the impression that the positive emotions felt stem from a much darker place, or rather that they're feeling the complete opposite in reality. In either case, though the choice of song to cover seemed strange at first, it certainly proved to be an inspired one.
