10 Rock Albums That Almost Killed Careers
3. Weathered - Creed
For as much vitriol as they get nowadays, it always felt like Creed got just the slightest bit of a raw deal. While something like Human Clay does sound oddly derivative of some of the grunge sounds of old these days, the hooks behind Scott Stapp's voice always held up as cool, with Mark Tremonti bringing amazing guitar chops to the top of the charts. However, you could tell that the creative well was starting to run dry by the time they started work on Weathered.
Made while at the height of their fame, most of this record just screams of being made in a mandated rush so the band could pay off their extravagant rock star expenses. Though there are some high points on songs like Bullets, the writing of Scott Stapp takes a big nosedive pretty much from the start, with songs like Lullaby and even the hit My Sacrifice feeling almost half finished.
It also doesn't help that Stapp is really starting to show his limits as a singer on this one, trading in the more edgy style of singing for blatant Eddie Vedder plagiarisms on almost every other song. Despite being able to fold most of the band into Alter Bridge a few years down the line, this was pretty much confirmation that Creed was starting to come to a slow, pathetic end.
