10 Rock Albums That Were A Nightmare To Make
8. Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
As Bruce Springsteen started the sessions for his third record, he was really at the end of his rope. After trying to shake the idea of being the latest replacement for Bob Dylan, The Boss' odes to the city life on albums like The Wild the Innocent and The E Street Shuffle were still managing to fall on deaf ears. Just when you thought he would fade into obscurity, his final chance at superstardom resulted in pure sonic lightning on Born to Run.
What's even crazier is when you realize that something like this almost didn't even see the light of day. For months on end, Springsteen would spent hours in the studio and push his E Street Band to the absolute brink, even entertaining the idea of just giving up and doing a live album. Once the title track started to gain some traction across the country though, The Boss knew he was in the process of making his best work.
Going back into the studio with Jimmy Iovine, the rest of the tracks became some of the greatest pastiches of the rock and roll lifestyle that anyone has ever made, from the misfits in Thunder Road to the down in the alley fights happening on Backstreets. While rock and roll may be known as just a lot of fun for casual listeners, this is the sound of what happens when you're at the end of your rope, willing to put everything on the line if it means doing what you love.
