10 Rock Albums That Were Ahead Of Their Time
5. The Stooges - The Stooges
Around the time that the Flower Generation was happening in both England and San Francisco, the rest of America wasn't really into the same kind of thing. The sounds of Woodstock may have made it feel like the revolution was possible, but it's hard to relate when you come from a factory city like Detroit. There's a certain darkness that comes with that kind of atmosphere, and Iggy Pop was willing to turn it into rock and roll anarchy on the Stooges' first record.
While you can definitely hear bits and pieces of heavier rock bands like the Rolling Stones on some of the songs here, Iggy's performance as a street punk turned into mayhem whenever he went onto the stage, putting his body through absolute hell to get the audience's attention. There were many accounts from those first Stooges shows where people wanted to run for the doors, but the ones who chose to stay knew what they were seeing.
For all of the wild antics that he got into, Iggy knew that what he was doing meant more than just your average rock and roll outfit, with songs like We Will Fall having a dark quality about it and the kind of abandon that comes with a song like I Wanna Be Your Dog. It might have been a little too in your face whenever you saw this live, but that dark quality that you got on record would be seen in everywhere from punk to goth to grunge as the genres spread out.
