10 Rock Albums That Were Ahead Of Their Time
7. Kid A - Radiohead
Towards the end of the millennium, Radiohead were quickly being looked at as the next U2. From the ethereal guitar landscapes of Jonny Greenwood to the spectral croon of Thom Yorke, the band's Ok Computer was sure to be the band's template for what would surely be many more legendary guitar albums.
However, Radiohead didn't really have that sound in mind for their next record. In fact, their next offering Kid A was the best way to followup an album like Ok Computer: run as far away from it as possible. With every song coated in a synthetic haze, Kid A is easily one of the most chilling records in the band's catalog. While a lot of alt-rockers were bummed that their favorite band had gone electronic, this record was just the right way to give rock a kick in the ass.
Since guitars are used sparingly throughout the record, this is probably the peak of art rock, with the band using various samples and soundscapes at will to just see what happens. Though it might have seemed disastrous at the outset, "Idioteque" and "Motion Picture Soundtrack" are still some of the most engaging songs the band have ever laid down. Fans might have been confused at the time, but Radiohead's adaptation to new sounds taught many rock bands to reach beyond just a few chords and distortion.
