10 Rock Bands That Almost Killed Each Other In The Studio
5. Rumours - Fleetwood Mac
At the start of the '70s, Fleetwood Mac had really come a long way since their origins in the '60s. Beginning as a typical blues rock outfit on their first albums with Peter Green, their latest incarnation with Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks gave them overnight success off the strength of Rhiannon and Landslide. All you had to do was make something that could top it...while everyone hated each other. Good luck.
Adding insult to injury, the Mac was in the process of falling apart when Rumours got started, with Buckingham and Nicks ending their relationship and John and Christine McVie getting a divorce during the album's production. It starts to sting even more when you realize that these songs are pretty much a document of those dark times, with Buckingham's Go Your Own Way being a scolding revenge song at Nicks and Songbird being Christine's peaceful heartache towards her former lover.
Going through a barrage of alcohol and cocaine in the process, each of these tracks turned into radio gold once they hit the airwaves, with almost every single cut becoming a radio favorite over the next few years. The Mac may have left this outing with their hearts in shreds, but when you actually sit down and listen to the music, they seemed to capture a bit of beauty no one could have imagined.
