10 Rock Bands That Completely Avoided The Sophomore Slump
2. What's the Story Morning Glory - Oasis
Most bands can't really do better than their debut, especially if it's on the level of Oasis' Definitely Maybe. Coming out of nowhere, this indie album off of Creation Records became one of the most successful albums in Britpop history, from the swagger of Supersonic to the amazing balladry of Live Forever. That was just the first helping though. It was time for the Gallagher Brothers to reach the big leagues.
Cut in the same studio where Queen created Bohemian Rhapsody, What's the Story Morning Glory is as close to rock and roll perfection as the Gallaghers ever got. Refining their Beatles pastiches with amazing hooks of his own, Noel Gallagher took a huge leap as a songwriter on this one, with songs like Don't Look Back In Anger and Wonderwall becoming some of the greatest anthems of the '90s overnight. There is also a perfect balance of the clean and dirty styles here, with thoughtful tracks like Cast No Shadow playing off of rockers like Some Might Say amazingly well.
While this made Oasis the biggest band in Britain, you could tell that they hit a ceiling with this album, with Be Here Now being nothing more than the scraps of their previous outings. Then again, if you're going to make a run at being one of the greatest rock acts in the world, it certainly helps when you have songs as amazing as this.
