10 Rock Bands That Continued Without Major Members
3. Dave Mustaine - Metallica
The rock and roll lifestyle is not always the healthiest for people to live from day to day. It's no secret that there's always a lot of drugs involved to keep you going, and more than a few of the biggest names in music have been known to indulge themselves from time to time. When you're in a band that has been nicknamed Alcholica though, how the hell do you get booted for drinking too much?
Well, that's before you actually saw what damage Dave Mustaine could do when he drank. As James Hetfield told it, the personality shift that happened once Mustaine drank was starting to affect the band's reputation. For instance, when the band was making their way to New York to sign a record deal with Megaforce Records, Dave was known for trashing the houses of some of the fans who let the band crash there.
By the time the band got to the Big Apple, they gave Dave a quick bus ticket back to California, eventually bringing in Kirk Hammett from the Bay Area band Exodus. As if to pour salt into the wound, Metallica even got some of Dave's ideas onto their records before Dave could use them later down the line, like the main riffs from Jump in the Fire and the Call of Ktulu. On the bus ride back though, Dave was already planting the seeds for what would become Megadeth. In just a few short hours, thrash metal was given a rivalry that wouldn't soon be forgotten.
