10 Rock Bands That Had A Really Shaky Start
3. Alice in Chains (or Alice N Chainz)
Once the era of grunge hit, glam metal was pretty much dead in the water. As soon as Nirvana started to make their way across MTV, the age of acts like Poison and Warrant had no real staying power anymore. Then again, we could have gotten one of grunge's biggest acts as an LA rock band instead.
Long before moving back up to Seattle, the original iteration of Alice in Chains was a much different beast than what it became. Rather than the dark themes and lyrics, the group's arrival in LA (stylized as Alice N Chainz) was much more in the vein of the dangerous side of the California rock scene. Imagine something like if Pearl Jam had tried to be Guns N Roses and you're in the right ballpark. However, it was only a matter of time before they started to drop the whole glam pursuit.
As Jerry Cantrell took over songwriting duties, most of the cowboy boots and spurs went out in the window, replaced with the grimy looking clothes that would end up defining the grunge movement. Though Alice were still getting on the same bills as acts like Megadeth, you could tell there was something else going on whenever they played something like Man in the Box. Before the rock world even knew what hit them, these initial posers were about to ignite the grunge movement from the ground up.
