10 Rock Bands That Had Alter Egos
3. Ziggy Stardust - David Bowie
When you're talking about the different personas of David Bowie, it's almost like you need a checklist for every different part of his career. One day he would be the alien Major Tom from the years of Space Oddity, and the next you'd see him as the Thin White Duke making his attempts at kraut rock on albums like Station to Station. If you're talking Bowie though, we have to call some special attention to the alien that came down to save Earth back in 1972.
While Hunky Dory really started David Bowie flirting with the styles of glam rock, he reinvented himself as Ziggy Stardust for the next album, with the rest of his backing band serving as the Spiders From Mars. As the album plays out, there's a lot more going on here than your traditional rock songs, as he talks about this alien with a snow white tan coming down to save the Earth from its five year death sentence, only to be chewed up and spit out by the fame monster in the process.
Although this is far from the only look that Bowie had, it has certainly become the most synonymous with his career, even making Aladdin Sane just a few years later as an Americanized update of what Ziggy would be like in the States. Even though Bowie has moved onto other planes of existence at this point, rock fans will still be shouting the praises of the great Starman for years to come.
