10 Rock Bands That Made Metal Songs
8. Concrete - Poppy
If you had told someone about the career trajectory of Poppy around 2013, there was no one who would have guessed that this was where she would end up. Although her more reggae enthused songs in the That Poppy days were definitely fun by Internet standards, her Choke EP was definitely something different, working with people like Fever 333 to inject some real venom into some of her songs. That album may have caught everyone by surprise, but Concrete was the equivalent to putting your fans' minds into a blender.
Even though this is a list comprising metal songs, you almost can't keep track of the genres that happen throughout this entire song, starting off with some harsh chords and ominous undertones, before the chorus comes in and Poppy does her normal cutesy schtick, which sounds like it's ripped directly out of a K Pop song. We're not done yet on the genre clashes though, going into full nu metal territory later on in the song before the ending of the track plays out what sounds like a hair metal style groove.
While most fans were more intrigued than anything else about this song, the entire thing actually holds up fairly well, taking the sounds of every genre and never watering them down to make room for the other genres to blend. This might definitely feel like a Frankenstein's monster version of a metal song, but in the days of genres becoming fluid, this is a good indicator of where metal could go in the near future.
