10 Rock Bands That Made Songs Specifically For Movies

7. State of Love and Trust - Pearl Jam

If Cameron Crowe had known the impact that his movie Singles would have had on the music community, he would probably be heralded as a genius. Even though the rom com elements of the film didn’t really translate to gangbusters at the box office or anything, the look into the lives of kids living in Seattle became one of the most fashionable things ever just a few years later when grunge hit. The soundtrack would have to follow suit, and Pearl Jam still had a few tricks up their sleeve.

Coming off of releasing their massive debut album Ten, the band were already in prime form when asked to contribute a song, with Breath being taken from the B-side of the Jeremy single. After spending some time on set as part of a fictional band though, Pearl Jam also threw in State of Love and Trust, which became one of the most energetic songs that they had ever worked on. Whereas Ten was as close to arena rock as the band ever got, this is a much more garage rock kind of setting, with Mike McCready’s bluesy licks feeling really off the cuff and the backing track being almost too fast for its own good.

Although the indie rock scene was very similar to the grunge aesthetic, this was the first time that Pearl Jam actually sounded like a relic from that time, turning in one of the most refined Replacements songs that Paul Westerberg never actually wrote. Pearl Jam would go much further away from their arena sound on the next album, and State of Love and Trust is a good way of bridging the gap between Ten and Vs.
