10 Rock Bands That Only Have One Bad Album

4. Red Hot Chili Peppers

Bad Album: Self-titled

Countless musicians have been able to benefit from the slow build. Though some knock it out of the park on their first step up to the plate, there are many artists who polish away at their sound until they hit on some of their best work. However, that also means you have to dig through monsoons of sh*t before you actually get there.

Throughout the '90s, the Red Hot Chili Peppers became one of the hottest bands in the world, fitting somewhere in between the funk rock stylings of the '70s while also being just alternative enough to break into the mainstream. On the other hand, listening to the group's self-titled is almost like night and day by comparison. A lot of this has to do with being at the wrong place at the wrong time though. Being an extension of their guitarists, the only two original members on this record are Anthony Kiedis and Flea, who, while bringing their A-game, can't really hold together the entire Peppers foundation.

While Cliff Martinez does a serviceable job behind the kit and Jack Sherman does deliver some tasty licks, the real magic wouldn't fall into place until you had people like Hillel Slovak and John Frusciante working in the Chilis' world. Even though this record does contain some production from Gang of Four's Andy Gill, this kind of thing is on the wrong side of entertainment.
