10 Rock Bands That Quit At The Top

9. The Police

The dynamic of a rock band doesn't always lead to the most stable of egos. Stretching across four or five people, it can get a bit testy when you have one member trying to outshine another at every turn. What makes it even more troublesome is when you have only 3 people.

When the Police first started getting underway in the late '70s, you could sense an ongoing push and pull just in the music they played. Much like every other power trio, albums like Outlandos D'Amour and Zenyatta Mondatta are reflections of where these guys are at the time, trying their best to give everyone a chance to shine without going to over the top. Even though that kind of creative tension can normally be murder to deal with, it did lead to some of the greatest songs of the '80s like Don't Stand So Close to Me and Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic.

However, the end of the Police couldn't have come at a more inopportune time from a commercial standpoint. After the success of the album Synchronicity and the mammoth single Every Breath You Take, they all opted to go their separate ways, with Sting moving on to a successful solo career. Though there have been some reunions every now and again, there's probably no chance of seeing any new music down the line.
