10 Rock Bands That Survived Key Members Leaving

3. Peter Gabriel - Genesis

Formed by Charterhouse School pupils Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford, Anthony Phillips and Peter Gabriel, Genesis were a band that quickly became all about Peter. His charismatic looks, on-stage presence and brash personality might have been too much for his fellow members to handle by the end, but it was the launchpad behind the group's initial success in mainland Europe, the UK and then eventually across the pond to the US.

Critics and incoming fans of the band seemed to be so much more preoccupied with Peter's antics that the idea of there even being a Genesis without him seemed impossible. However, the group still consisted of the undeniably talented core of Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett and the legendary Phil Collins on drums.

After failing to find a singer with the natural tone to carry the Genesis direction, Phil Collins volunteered to sing vocals on a couple of the album's songs. When that went well, he was chosen to be the new frontman of the band. From sitting on the brink of extinction, Genesis went on to record their most successful period to date, with 10th studio album Duke alone spending two straight weeks atop the UK charts.
