10 Rock Bands That Wrote Songs In Different Genres
4. Jesus of Suburbia - Green Day
The genres of progressive rock and punk feel like oil and water for most rock fans. Most punk fans are all about getting to the point and doing it in as concise a musical statement as possible, and hearing bands take 20 minutes to play one song was not going to fly with that crowd. There was always a middle ground for these two genres to come together, and it took a band like Green Day to fully realize it on American Idiot.
Crafting the idea of a punk rock opera, Jesus of Suburbia is where we get into the real storyline behind the album, spanning 9 minutes giving you the synopsis of the main character. While the idea of having a 9 minute punk song feels like it shouldn't work, Billie Joe Armstrong wasn't even thinking in terms of one set song. Originally coming across the idea when they accidentally wrote the basis for the song Homecoming, Billie approached this song as a medley of 5 separate songs packaged together as one, moving from the original Jesus of Suburbia to I Don't Care until our hero finally decides to leave his old world behind on Tales From Another Broken Home.
We might just be getting started with the story, but the band knew that they were going to need the big guns to get people on board, with Billie even saying that he was trying to write his own version of Bohemian Rhapsody. That's a bold statement to even suggest trying, but Jesus of Suburbia comes pretty close to the Queen classic in terms of grandeur alone.
