10 Rock Bands Who Never Topped Their First Album
1. The Killers - Hot Fuss (2004)
Believe it or not, one of the most enduring and popular alternative rock albums of not only the past two decades but of all time was written by Mormons.
That's right, rock poster boy Brandon Flowers is a devotee of the latter day saints, and made rock history as part of a little band known as The Killers with the runaway success of their first record Hot Fuss.
Whatever The Strokes started, The Killers finished, marrying chant-able rock riffs, catchy hooks and lyrics that you still hear on the streets of the western world every Saturday night. A non-stop slew of hits, Hot Fuss goes from strength to strength, from stadium rock to indie sentimentality, weaving synth lines into a traditional four-piece setup to give its best tracks an edge over imitators and detractors.
A band with definite periods, their next album Sam's Town (2006) was written in the same mode, but without the hit-making power of the first, before The Killers moved on to pastures new with synth-heavy new-wave record Day & Age (2008), a reinvention of their core sound with the rock-heavy Battle Born (2012) and a more recent string of pop rock records.
Needless to say, nothing has knocked Hot Fuss from its pride of place at the head of their discography, and surely nothing will. But, given The Killers are still packing stadiums to the rafters, it's probably not much of a concern.
