10 Rock Bands With 2 Masterpiece Music Albums

2. Beatles

There's a good case to be made that the Beatles revolutionized rock and roll on a couple different occasions over the course of the '60s. Even though the band may have been playing the kind of R&B infused hits of the time back in their native Liverpool, seeing them on the Ed Sullivan Show marked a turning point in rock and roll, with the British Invasion coming in with the arrival of the Rolling Stones right behind them. Once the Fab Four got too big for the touring life though, that's when they really started to experiment.

While records like Revolver and Rubber Soul hinted at something different, Sgt. Peppers was the leap off the deep end for the band, soaking their sound in psychedelia and turning in songs with really unorthodox pop structures, like George Harrison's Indian textures and the full orchestral sweep at the end of A Day in the Life. This was the peak of the band's collective ambition, but once they started to fall out with business, they wanted to leave their fans on a high note.

Coming together one more time with producer George Martin, Abbey Road is the peak of all the band's talents, with John Lennon and Paul McCartney writing their own masterpieces like Come Together and Oh Darling to eventually stringing together their table scraps into a mini opera on the final side of the record. The Let It Be project may have been released as the band's true swan song, but Abbey Road is the record that the classic era of the band should have gone out on.
