10 Rock Music Acts That Went Dark (AND NAILED IT)

7. Standing on the Shoulder of Giants - Oasis

Once Oasis finally arrived back on the scene, they seemed to have lost all their momentum. All of the mania that surrounded them in Britpop's heyday had seemed to fall by the wayside, and Bonehead and Guigsy had to be kicked out of the band during recording because of personality differences between them and the Gallaghers brothers. This was the start of phase two of the band, and the brothers were left to pick up the pieces on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.

Compared to the first handful of Oasis releases, you can tell that Noel is definitely going through some problems here, looking to kick his severe drug habits and trying to hold onto his own sanity in the process. While songs like Go Let It Out and Who Feels Love put us on firm territory by giving us a Beatle-esque psychedelic sound, the back half of the record is where you start to hear Noel's dark side come out, either in the sound of songs like Gas Panic or the punky attitude behind something like I Can See a Liar.

And even though Oasis lyrics can sometimes be misconstrued as gibberish, Roll It Over and Where Did It All Go Wrong can easily be portraits of Noel looking back on the last few years, wondering if he's actually spent and becoming yesterday's news to his fans. Oasis still had a long road ahead of them before they would eventually dissolve, but this is easily the most tortured album that they ever put out.
