10 Rock Music Songs That Aren't About What You Think
8. Closing Time - Semisonic
You'd be forgiven for forgetting that there was a band called Semisonic.
The Minneapolis outfit put out three albums between 1996 and 2001, with just one of them making any sort of notable impact on the charts. That was their second record, Feeling Strangely Fine, which was home to the hit single Closing Time.
The song was a massive seller for the band and lives on today thanks to its appearance in The US Office.
Stanley will be thrilled.
The lyrics of the song are about a group of people being chucked out of a bar after last orders. The chorus consists of the line, "I know who I want to take me home" on repeat, which implies a level of romance or friendship is involved.
Apparently, according to drummer Jacob Slichter, it was written by songwriter Dan Wilson about the impending birth of his child.
It frames the act of human birth as being thrown out of a bar by a bouncer; "you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here".
This revelation casts the song in a very different light and sudden all those alcohol references seem a bit inappropriate.
