10 Rock Music Songs That Aren't About What You Think

6. One - U2

Whether you've heard the original version or the one with Mary J. Blige, chances are you've come across the song One by U2 in your time.

It was a massive deal both times it got released, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and giving Bono's god complex even more ammunition.

The chorus contains the line "One love, we get to share it", which seems pretty happy if you don't think about it too much.

Unfortunately, the Irish band were not in a happy place when they wrote it.

It was inspired by their visit to Berlin shortly after it reunified. They were expecting to see a city brimming with joy, but instead found the place in a sour mood.

The song became about how people need to co-exist in spite of their stark differences. Guitarist The Edge once called it "a bitter, twisted, vitriolic conversation between two people who've been through some nasty, heavy stuff".

This makes it a little awkward that the song gets played a lot at weddings, something Bono himself finds very strange.

He once said on the topic, "Are you mad? It's about splitting up!"
